This presentation will discuss the barriers and challenges of both supervising counselors providing telemental health counseling and providing supervision via telehealth. The presentation will review the legal and ethical concerns, developmental process of supervision and the “soft skills” required to conduct therapy and supervision via telemental health. The presenters will provide a toolkit for participants that includes templates for how to create supervision contracts that are specific to telemental health and innovative interventions to engage the client and supervisee in the therapeutic and supervisory process.

Sheri Pickover, PhD, LPC BC-TMH
Dr. Pickover is a Professor and Program Director of the Central Michigan University Counseling Program. She has 18 years experience in higher education and 30 years of clinical experience providing individual, group. and family therapy; and 20 years of experience providing clinical supervision to counselors in training and new professionals. She has co-authored a text on working with children and families in the child welfare system and has provided telemental health for two years.
Alison K. Arnekrans, PhD, LPC, NCC, ACS, BC-TMH
Allison K. Arnekrans obtained her doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Supervision from the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio, and is currently working as an Associate Professor at Central Michigan University. Her professional background includes service as a Licensed Professional Counselor and supervisor working with youth/families, an Employee Assistance Program, and within a partial hospitalization program. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Arnekrans is highly involved at the local, state, and national levels in counseling associations and service to the profession. Her current research interests include maternity and academia, personal counseling requirement in graduate programs, and telehealth in campus training clinics.
Nicholaus Erber-LaPierre, PhD, LPC, CCMHC, CAADC, BC-TMH, ACS
Dr. Erber-LaPierre has worked with the transgender population as a mental health counseling professional since 2011, and has served as an affiliate counselor for the University of Michigan Comprehensive Gender Services program as a remote clinician in rural Michigan from 2011-2017. Dr. Erber-LaPierre has served as an Assistant Professor of Counseling in the Counseling and Special Education department in the College of Education and Human Services at Central Michigan University since 2020, and has held faculty positions at Henderson State University, Seattle University, and Southern New Hampshire University since 2015. Dr. Erber-LaPierre graduated from Walden University with his PhD in 2015, where the focus of his dissertation work was the identity development process and lived experiences of trans-identified individuals in rural areas. Prior to this Dr. Erber-LaPierre received his Master of Arts in Community Counseling from Western Michigan University and his Bachelor of Science from Michigan State University. Dr. Erber-LaPierre’s research interests include transgender health navigation and literacy, integrated health practices, and multicultural counseling competence.
