Description

Human trafficking is an egregious human rights violation that impacts vulnerable persons worldwide. The International Labor Organization estimates there is over 50 million persons worldwide who are victims of trafficking. The COVID 19 pandemic increased access to exploiting vulnerable populations and led to a rise in human trafficking. Addressing human trafficking has focused on prosecution and legislative models at the exclusion of public health interventions. The BCM Anti Human Trafficking program was developed to build a public health response to trafficking where an estimated 313,000 persons are trafficked in the state of Texas alone.

The demand for a rapid shift to a telehealth platform during covid 19 offered an improved opportunity to train healthcare providers in human trafficking after the passage of the Texas SB 2059 in 2019, which requires healthcare providers to obtain an hour of training in human trafficking. The training improved identification and referrals to a trauma informed human trafficking survivors program where patients could be seen individually and in groups via telehealth. We have been able to conduct research meetings and team writing meetings via telehealth as well as advocate locally and internationally via telehealth platforms.
