Description

Lessons learned from previous public health emergencies, including disasters and infectious disease outbreaks, can inform public and behavioral health practice. This presentation will review 3 historic events: Hurricane Katrina, the Flint crisis, and the U.S. response to the Zika virus, and discuss key aspects that can help improve our practice and help us prepare for post-pandemic recovery.

This is a non-interactive self-study course that was recorded from a live webinar presented by Captain Michael King on March 24, 2021.

Instruction consists of 1 hour of video instruction and a post-test.

Instructor

Captain Michael King, PhD, MSW, LCSW

Captain Michael King is a social worker and epidemiologist who has worked at the intersection of behavioral and public health for over 17 years. He is Regional Administrator for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA) covering HHS Region IV which includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Prior to joining SAMHSA in 2019, he supported State and Federal public health capacity at the U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as an instructor and Field Supervisor for post-doctoral fellows enrolled in the Epidemic Intelligence Service. CAPT King previously served for over 10 years on the National Asthma Surveillance Team in the National Center for Environmental Health where his interests focused on chronic disease surveillance, environmental exposure and hazard assessment, and disaster mental health. As a Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Public Health Service, CAPT King deploys routinely following disasters and has had the privilege to lead one of five national Mental Health Response teams (Team 5) that provide crisis counseling and technical assistance to medically-underserved populations, with a focus on emergency public health response.

Credit Hours: This course consists of 1 continuing education hour of credit.

How to Complete the Course and Earn Your Certificate

 To receive your certificate of completion you must complete the course in its entirety.

To complete an Online Self Study Course, one must register, log in, select the My Courses option from the menu items, click the Course Title, complete all of the modules, complete and pass the post-test(s), and complete the course evaluation.

A grade of at least 80% or more is required to pass the post-test. Retaking the post-test is possible until the participant is able to pass the test.

Psychologists and other professionals seeking CE credit through our approval with the American Psychological Association are asked but not required to complete the course evaluation before obtaining their certificate of completion, however passing a post-test for online self-study courses, and submitting one's attendance for live on-site and live webinars is required.

You can download or print your certificate of completion by logging into your account, navigating to the course by selecting the My Courses option from the menu items, clicking the Course Title, scrolling to the Certificate of Completion section, and clicking on the Certificate of Completion link to either download it or print it.

Participants may request a printed version of their certificate of completion to be delivered by mail. A shipping/handling fee of $6.95 will be charged per request. Shipping internationally may require an additional charge.
