Description

The Covid-19 pandemic has alerted school staff to emerging risks, problematic policies, and imperative professional responsibilities in K-12 schools. The Recognizing and Responding to Warning Signs course teaches school professionals a comprehensive and student-centered crisis response approach.

In the event of a potential mental health emergency, the warning signs are only the beginning of the response process. This course details the interventions that occur before and after the recognition of a crisis. Modules on active listening, unconditional positive regard, educator decision-making, and resource mapping give school staff the tools and strategies to enact compassionate solutions.

The multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) approach focuses on adding a strengths-based perspective to student assistance. By understanding student strengths and behavioral risk factors (such as trauma), school professionals can create a thriving atmosphere that centers around students.

Learning Objectives:

This is a non-interactive self-study course.

Instruction consists of 1 hour of video instruction and a post-test.

Instructors

Michelle Gross, MEd, MBA, NCSC, LCMHC earned her master’s degree in school counseling as well as an MBA from Wake Forest University. She has over fifteen years of experience in the counseling and education industry as a National Certified School Counselor (NCSC) and National Board Certified Teacher (NBCT). She is a Board Certified Coach (BCC), National Certified Counselor (NCC), a Board Certified Tele-Mental Health Provider (BC-TMH) and a licensed clinical mental health counselor (LCMHC) in North Carolina. Michelle co-designed the Educator Edition of the Mental Health Facilitator training program through the National Board for Certified Counselors. Michelle works with adolescents, collegiate, and adults of all ages with a focus on ADHD to develop coping strategies to foster personal growth and development. 

Jill Battal, Ph.D., NCSP, is a school psychologist at Boston Public Schools. She currently serves as the Data and Research Coordinator for the districts’ Comprehensive Behavioral Health Model (CBHM). CBHM is a multi-tiered system of supports for behavioral health that integrates tiered supports and services within a school according to student needs, and recognizes family and community partnerships as an integral part of a school’s success. As Data and Research Coordinator, Jill chairs the CBHM Research Committee and serves on the Executive Workgroup. Prior to assuming this role within CBHM, Jill gained first-hand experience implementing problem-solving models including Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), Response to Intervention (RTI), within urban schools. She worked at a variety of schools serving students in preschool through 8th grade, including students with emotional disabilities, severe intellectual and physical disabilities, and autism. 

Marquel Norton, Ed.S, NCSP, is a black queer nationally certified school psychologist at Boston Public Schools. He currently serves as the building based school psychologist for the Curley K-8 School in Jamaica Plain, a school specializing in servicing students with a variety of needs and abilities (Autism Spectrum Disorder, Mild Intellectual Impairments, Specific Learning Disabilities). He also coordinates the efforts of his school adhering to the Comprehensive Behavioral Health Model, implementing socio-emotional learning curriculum, positive behavior interventions and supports, and behavioral health interventions at various levels. Marquel also carries a concentration in Critical Education Studies from Tufts University and has done presentations and lectures on Critical Race Theory and Racial Historical Trauma. Largely, Marquel is interested in research on group work interventions and supporting LGBTQIA+ adolescents and young adults and their families.

Credit Hours: This course consists of 1 continuing education hour of credit.

Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Social workers completing this course receive 1 clinical continuing education credit.

How to Complete the Course and Earn Your Certificate

To receive your certificate of completion you must complete the course in its entirety.

To complete an Online Self Study Course, one must register, log in, select the My Courses option from the menu items, click the Course Title, complete all of the modules, complete and pass the post-test(s), and complete the course evaluation.

A grade of at least 80% or more is required to pass the post-test. Retaking the post-test is possible until the participant is able to pass the test.

Psychologists and other professionals seeking CE credit through our approval with the American Psychological Association are asked but not required to complete the course evaluation before obtaining their certificate of completion, however passing a post-test for online self-study courses, and submitting one's attendance for live on-site and live webinars is required.

You can download or print your certificate of completion by logging into your account, navigating to the course by selecting the My Courses option from the menu items, clicking the Course Title, scrolling to the Certificate of Completion section, and clicking on the Certificate of Completion link to either download it or print it.
